Academic Profile and Research Mission
Professor Su-Er Guo brings more than four decades of experience in nursing scholarship and clinical practice. She began her career in 1984 as a medical and infection-control nurse at Taipei Medical University Hospital. Since then, her professional trajectory has encompassed clinical supervision, academic teaching, postdoctoral research, and leadership positions, including professor, department chair, and research center director at multiple universities. Her academic journey across Taiwan, Canada, and the United States has provided her with a broad international perspective and a rich multicultural background.
Professor Guo's research focuses on thoracic nursing, pulmonary rehabilitation, health promotion (including exercise, smoking cessation, and air pollution prevention), health behavior science, and evidence-based care. She is committed to translating scientific findings into clinical practice to improve the health outcomes and quality of life for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), individuals at high risk for lung cancer, and populations vulnerable to air pollution. Over the past two decades, Professor Guo has led numerous major research projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology (now the National Science and Technology Council or NSTC) and the Chang Gung Medical Foundation, establishing a distinguished record of scholarly achievement.
In 2023, Professor Guo was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), one of the highest honors in global nursing scholarship, in recognition of her outstanding contributions and international impact in nursing research, education, and practice. She also serves as a reviewer and editorial board member for several international Science Citation Index journals and actively promotes global academic collaboration. Through multiple memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with prestigious institutions such as Case Western Reserve University, the University of British Columbia, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, she continues to expand the international visibility of nursing scholarship in Taiwan.

During her doctoral studies at Case Western Reserve University (2001–2005), Professor Guo also served as a Graduate Research Assistant in the School of Nursing. In this role, she was actively involved in multiple nursing science research projects and gained extensive experience in quantitative research and clinical trial design. After completing her doctorate, Professor Guo immediately joined the School of Nursing and the School of Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada as a postdoctoral research fellow (2005–2007). This appointment further strengthened her expertise in environmental health, epidemiology, and interdisciplinary nursing research. This period of international academic training not only helped Professor Guo develop a rigorous research mindset but also laid an indispensable foundation for her later leadership of multiple NSTC-funded large-scale research projects, publication of high-impact articles in international journals, and promotion of academic collaboration among Taiwan, the United States, and Canada.

Research Project Execution Overview Over the Past Decade
Over the past decade (2014–2025), Professor Su-Er Guo has consistently secured research funding from multiple institutions, including the Ministry of Science and Technology (now the National Science and Technology Council), the Chang Gung Medical Foundation, the Ministry of Education, and local governments. She has led more than thirty research projects spanning important fields such as COPD health management, particulate matter and health, health promotion interventions, including digital interventions. Professor Guo has served as the principal investigator of several large integrated projects, demonstrating outstanding project management and cross-disciplinary research integration capabilities. NSTC Projects
Over the past decade, she has led or co-led more than twelve NSTC projects, with cumulative funding exceeding NT$12 million. Research topics include COPD home exercise models, health promotion for populations at high risk for lung cancer, and the construction of theoretical models of smoking cessation behavior processes.
Chang Gung Medical Foundation Projects
She has led multiple integrated and individual projects funded by the Chang Gung Medical Foundation. The currently ongoing integrated project, “The Effects of Particulate Matter and Inflammatory Factors on Acute Exacerbation and Lung Injury in COPD,” has received total funding of NT$16.17 million.
Ministry of Education Projects
Professor Guo has led the Ministry of Education’s smart health industry talent development project and the Study Abroad Dream Project, promoting interdisciplinary nursing talent cultivation and international exchange, with cumulative funding exceeding NT$2.4 million.
